How to Anchor a Pergola
- 1). Dig a hole. Use your post-hole digger to dig a hole 30 inches deep, 8 inches in diameter.
- 2). Add rebar. Place several 25-30 inch pieces of rebar into the hole.
- 3). Pour concrete into the hole. In areas with colder weather, pour concrete past the frost line. Pour until hole is filled about 2 inches above ground level.
- 4). Install anchors. Before the concrete dries, push the metal anchor into the exact center of the post hole. Make sure they are facing the right direction and perfectly square.
- 5). Allow the concrete to dry. Quick-drying varieties can take just a few hours. Standard types can take up to 3 days to dry.
- 6). Place the post into the anchor. While bracing the post to keep it level, secure the post with 4-inch machine bolts.
- 7). Add trim. Many anchor kits come with fitted wood pieces used to cover the metal and concrete and create a seamless structure. Use as directed.
- 8). Repeat steps 1-7 for all pergola posts.
