Wine Trails of Kansas
When Dorothy was off to see the Wizard of Oz she didn’t have a chance to stop and get him a bottle of wine. It’s too bad because she could have brought some right from her home state of Kansas, where they have been making wine for more than 100 years.
While you can’t exactly call Kansas a top U.S. wine state, they are growing grapes and creating some good wines. Among the wines you will find are those made from these grapes, all native to Kansas: Red-Chambourcin, Norton (also referred to as Cynthiana), and St.
Vincent; White-Seyval, Chardonal, Vignoles, Melody, and Fredonia.
There are currently three wine trails in the state of Kansas: Glacial Hills, Kaw Valley, and Somerset. The offerings in each are continually expanding so check before you go to see where you can taste, tour, and buy. Also keep in mind that, at the present time, Kansas law does not allow wineries to sell wine on Sundays. It might be better to plan your visit for another day of the week when you'll be able to purchase the wines you like as many are not available for sale out of the area.
Glacial Hills Wine Trail
The Glacial Hills Wine Trail was just officially launched in May 2015 by four enthusiastic wineries. While you explore the Kansas countryside, stop by these wineries and pick up a card to get stamped at each one. Once you complete the card, a complimentary bottle stopper will be given to you by the trail.
Crooked Post and Jefferson Hill wineries offer music on the weekends. Glaciers Edge Winery has a covered porch and encourages picnicking.
Crescent Moon offers a picturesque view from their tasting patio. Contact the wineries directly for details of events and amenities.
