How to Travel With a Pet
- 1). Have your pet checked by a veterinarian. Before leaving for your trip, bring your pet to the vet's office to ensure that its shots are current. Also ask your veterinarian for a certificate of good health and proof of vaccinations so you can bring these papers along with you on your trip. They're important to have handy should anything happen.
- 2). Reserve a place that allows pets. Hotels that allow you to bring your furry family members along with you are few and far between. Make sure that the place you plan on staying in allows you to bring your pets with you. And make sure you reserve your room early.
- 3). Get an ID tag for your pet. This tag can hang easily around its collar and should include the name, address and telephone number of a person who should be contacted should anything happen to your pet. Make sure the person listed on the tag can be easily reached and readily available.
- 4). Try several short trips with your pet first. If your pet has never traveled before, you won't know whether it is prone to motion sickness or not. Check it out beforehand by bringing it on a few short trips in the car. These trips will help the animal overcome any motion sickness it may experience. If, after several trips you find that your pet is very sensitive to motion sickness, mention it to your veterinarian. They may give your pet a tranquilizer to help it handle the trip better.
- 5). Prepare a travel kit for your pet. You want to see that your pet travels safely and comfortably, so it's best to have a travel kit prepared for the trip. Such a kit should include the pet's water bowl and food dish; food and a thermos of water; a leash, a brush, a blanket and some toys. Familiar items should help keep your pet calm while traveling too.
- 6). Bring a carrier with you. Whether you're traveling overseas or across the country, you want to make sure your pet travels safely and securely by keeping it in a carrier. Make sure the carrier is comfortable, well-ventilated and closes securely. You want to get your pet to its destination in one piece.
