    • 1). Walk through your yard looking for broadleaf, grassy or sedge weed growth. Press a shovel 3 inches from the weed's base and 6 inches deep to lift the entire root system of the weed from underneath.

    • 2). Throw away or burn your weeds, but refrain from placing them in your compost. Till the areas of bare spots to break up the soil to sow Bermuda grass seed. It is best to sow Bermuda grass in your bare spots, because it spreads faster than the St. Augustine grass in the yard.

    • 3). Broadcast Bermuda grass seed in the bare areas. Use 1/10 of a pound per square foot or 1 pound per 1,000 square feet. Cover your Bermuda grass seed with 1/8 of an inch of compost. By broadcasting Bermuda grass seed over the bare areas, you help prevent weed seeds from germinating.

    • 4). Roll a lawn roller that has been filled halfway with water over your grass seed to establish good soil-to-seed contact.

    • 5). Water your bare areas with a mist of water. Keep the grass seeds' soil moist by watering three times a day starting in the morning and ending in the midafternoon. Avoid watering late in the afternoon, because it raises the risk of your grass contracting a fungal disease.
