How to Find a Good Deal on Airline Tickets

    • 1). Go online. In addition to the traditional airline website booking, consumers have the option to search sites that allow them to compare several airline rates at once. These are sites such as Expedia, Orbitz, Hotwire and Yahoo! Travel. Search all of these sites for the best deal.

    • 2). Be flexible. Flights at different times during the day vary in price. Even days of the week matter when it comes to how much you will pay. The Fare Compare website says that Wednesdays are the cheapest days to fly. That is followed by Tuesdays and Saturdays.

    • 3). Plan your purchase. According to the Fare Compare website, the best flight deals are available Tuesdays at 3 p.m. eastern. If you can, log on to your purchase site of choice then to find the best discounted fares.

    • 4). Flash your membership card. AAA and AARP members as well as U.S. veterans are often eligible for discounts of 5 to 10 percent.

    • 5). Ask. With so many airlines competing for customers, sometimes a phone call to the airline's booking service will get you a better deal than what is posted for all customers.
