Jeep Gives Us Liberty
Out With Cherokee... In With Liberty
Jeep is a legendary brand that has defined sport-utility vehicles during its 60-year history. However, it's been nearly a decade since Jeep has added a new model to its lineup. In 2002 Jeep introduces the new Jeep Liberty as the replacement vehicle for the Jeep Cherokee, which ends production in mid-2001. The Cherokee has been around in essentially the same form since 1984.
In fact, of the Liberties that will be built in the U.S., those being sent overseas will be called Cherokees. But the Liberty is nothing like the Cherokee.
Liberty features:
- 4-door, 5-passenger SUV
- uniframe body excellent for rough off-road riding
- independent front suspension system
- link-coil rear suspension
- rack and pinion steering
- V6 engine with four wheel drive
- a very upright profile to deliver efficient space utilization
- also available in standard rear-wheel drive with 150-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission
- also available in limited model with leather upholstery and loaded accessories
- the first Jeep vehicle with available side air bag curtains
DaimlerChrysler had previously scheduled to halt their production of the Jeep Cherokee in November 2000. However, in response to customer demand (and on the heels of record 1999 sales of the Jeep product line), they extended their production of the Jeep Cherokee at the Parkway Plant in Toledo, Ohio past the scheduled close of production date.
After 16 years in the market, few sport utility vehicles have had as much staying power as the Jeep Cherokee. Liberty Brings Death to the Cherokee Photo Courtesy of DiamlerCrysler Liberty Brings Death to the Cherokee
