Owl Keychain Crafts
- Take an orange or brown colored piece of fabric and cut two owl bodies, leaving one-fourth inch for seam allowance. From white felt fabric, cut a small circle and two tiny rounded triangles and sew the circle onto the head. Sew the triangles to the bottom to serve as the feet. Glue tiny googly eyes onto the face. Next, with the right sides facing each other, sew the two pieces of cloth together, leaving the bottom unstitched. When you get to the area between the ears, take a 2-inch string loop with two ends knotted together and sandwich it between the two fabrics so that the knot is left inside. Sew the top closed. Turn the figure right side out. Stuff the partially-sewn figure with kapok, polyester, wool, pellet, or any stuffing you prefer. Sew the bottom shut to finish the owl.
- Knit an owl figure, mixing different yarn (either natural wool or synthetic fibers) colors for the body, head, wings and face. Usually various shades of brown for the body and white for the face work best. You can make your owl more complex by adding beads for the eyes. Create a separate piece for the hanging string, which can have a knit flower at the end. You can hang your keys by a round metal key ring hooked onto your owl. Communities, such as knittinghelp.com, can help with techniques and concerns when knitting.
- Cut owl figures of the same sizes from fabric and another color of fabric for the inner lining, leaving a one-fourth seam allowance for each piece. Sew the lining to the right side of the fabric, leaving about an inch and a half on the side to turn it over. Try to keep the seam allowance very small at the ears to make them pointed enough. Do this to the other fabric and lining. With fusible web, attach felt to the front of the owl for the eye sockets, beak and belly. Glue two tiny black buttons onto the eye sockets. Topstitch the two owl bodies together, leaving a very small gap between the ears and the bottom open. Tie a metal key ring to a piece of cord. The cord should be twice the length of the body. Draw the cord through the bottom to the head opening. You can opt to zigzag leaf patterns to cover the upper length of your cord.
- Cut a very simple pattern of an owl on a piece of paper. Use this pattern to cut a pair of owl bodies on felt. Cut out eye sockets from a cream-colored felt, a tiny triangle from brown, and tiny eyes from black felt paper. Glue these onto the front. With slanting straight stitches using yellow thread, make some rows for the feathers. Buttonhole stitch the two pieces of felt to each other, leaving a small gap in the middle of the head between the ears and the bottom part open. With a ribbon twice the length of your owl’s body, tie a key and draw the ribbon through the open bottom right through the top hole.
