Unlike other pets, they can not synthesize their own vitamin C and must get it from their diet.
A properly balanced diet is the best preventative.
Excessive Scratching Excessive scratching is usually one of two things, either a fungal infection or parasites.
If you detect parasites to be a problem clean and disinfect the cage & contents.
Your vet will be able to provide you with a medicated shampoo for your pet.
Diarrhea Diarrhea can be an indication of a serious intestinal problem or a reaction to antibiotics.
Milder forms can be caused by too much fresh fruit or vegetables.
It may be corrected by a change in diet but it should still be taken seriously.
Coughing, Wheezing Or Labored Breathing Occasional coughing is not an issue.

It may be a sign of respiratory infection.
Any congestion in the lungs could lead to pneumonia.

You should know what the normal weight of your guinea pig is and check it occasionally.
Be aware of the natural behaviors your guinea pig exhibits.
In order to understand or head off a potential problem a change in their behavior is the first sign.
With enough knowledge, in some cases you may be able to treat a problem yourself.
More serious issues will of course require treatment by a veterinarian.
You should know the difference.
If there's any question, consult with your vet.
Be aware that there are two medications that should never be administered to a guinea pig.
