    Update Your Kitchen

    • 1). Remove and replace outdated kitchen cabinets and hardware. Hire a professional handyman to install new cabinets if you're unable to do the job yourself.

    • 2). If you're on a tight budget, repaint your cabinets. Wipe any grease or dirt off of the cabinets. Sand your cabinets using sandpaper. Apply an oil-based primer over the cabinets and an enamel for the finish coat.

    • 3). Remove outdated sinks and countertops and install granite, solid surfacing or new laminate. Install a brand new stainless steel sink and faucet.

    • 4). Remove and replace old outlet covers and switchplates.

    • 5). Remove and replace outdated kitchen light fixtures. Hire an electrician to install new lights.

    • 6). If at all possible, consider opening the kitchen floor plan by removing a non-load-bearing wall. Ask a professional contractor if a wall can possibly be removed and have a professional complete the job.

    Update Your Bathroom

    • 1). Remove old grout from your bathroom tiles by chiseling and scraping it out, and apply freshly mixed grout.

    • 2). Remove an outdated vanity and install a new one. For a small bathroom, install a small vanity or pedestal sink to save room.

    • 3). Remove outdated or cracked toilets. Hire a plumber to install a new wax ring and a new toilet.

    • 4). Repair the walls if necessary and repaint the walls a neutral color.

    • 5). Install new towel bars, hardware, mirror, shower head and toilet paper holder. Update the light fixture.

    Update Your Flooring

    • 1). If possible, install hardwood flooring throughout your home.

    • 2). Refinish old hardwood floors. Hire a flooring expert or rent a floor sander and do the job yourself.

    • 3). Remove outdated or stained carpeting, and have new carpeting installed.

    Add Curb Appeal

    • 1). Plant shrubs and flowers around the perimeter of your home. Plant flowers or bushes along walkways and around your deck.

    • 2). Repaint or restain your front porch. Replace old rotten boards and install a new front door.

    • 3). Remove broken patio bricks and install new ones.

    • 4). Remove unsightly weeds from the lawn and plant new grass seed. Install rock borders around trees and plant flowers inside them.
