Shanghai is a Chinese city which has been greatly influenced by foreign culture during the course of its prosperity. Wukang Road, which measures just over one thousand meters in length, is a concrete representation of the city's international and cosmopolitan character

In Shanghai, there are 64 roads that are not allowed to broaden. Among these 64 roads, Wukang Road is the most special one. Its north and south link two Shanghai's most prosperous avenues. However, Wukang Road extraordinarily keeps its unique mystery and tranquility. Walking in Wukang Road, different with the bustle and hustle of the outside world, all you feel is quiet and peace from heart.

It is within China's time-honored street communities that the cherished memories of a city are hidden. These communities reflect the city's historical roots and the traditional ways of life for the people who live there. As modern cities develop, a great number of valuable locations are either being abandoned or demolished. In an effort to preserve and emphasize the significance of what remains, CRI is publishing a series of features on China's cultural and historical streets.

The road used to be in the French Concession and was bordered by western-style buildings. In recent years, a collection of newly built Spanish villas have been added to the area, making the road a popular sightseeing spot for tourists.

Besides its western allure, the road was also home to many Chinese celebrities during the mid 20th century. The residences of Chinese literary figure Ba Jin, star singer Zhou Xuan and established actor and film director Sun Daolin are all located along the road.

This year, Wukang road was recognized as one of China's historical and cultural roads, for its embodiment of foreign culture in Shanghai.

Ministry of Culture, State Administration of Cultural Heritage has awarded the "China Road, Shanghai Wukang historical and cultural street" Honor, June 23, Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and Wukang Road, Xuhui District government in Shanghai Tourist Information Centre, Chinese history and culture Wukang Road, Street, celebrities old home ceremony

1. The trees

There are many Wutong Trees (or Phoenix trees) along the both side of the road, and form a beautiful and artistic €cave€. The road is small, and there are not many cars on it (actually, it is a north-to-south single way road). Walking along the road is best experience, since you can just take your time. No hurry, and no car horn. It takes about 30 minutes for one way.

2. The old villas

The highlight of the road is the old villa, and old residential area behind the trees. Even people familiar with the area may not know the name and history of all the villas. Most of the villas are either French style or Spanish style with big yards, and tall trees. Wandering in that area, you don't feel you are in a big city at all. Sometimes you can see people grow vegetable in their garden, and in an extreme case, I saw chicken running around in one garden. It is amazing how life is in these 100 million RMB houses.

3. Connection with other nice road

Along the Wukang road is a nice area. You will see Xingguo Road, Taikang Road, Hunan Road, Fuxing Road, Wuyuan Road, and Changle Road - all these roads are as beautiful as Wukang Road, and all worth some time to explorer.
