    • 1). Cut the skate lace into three portions. Each portion should be about 4-5 inches long. You will be using these to tie your shield to the mask, and you can always trim off extra, so you should cut them longer than you think they will need to be. Be sure not to use the plastic parts of the laces, as these could poke you in the face while playing.

    • 2). Line up the shield along the bottom of the mask. The hole drilled in the middle of the shield should line up with the middle of the mask.

    • 3). Loop one strand of skate lace through the middle hole of the shield and wrap one end of the lace through the middle cage wire of the mask. Tie a tight knot to hold the shield in place. Some goalies prefer to let the shield hang loose, others prefer it tighter to the mask so it doesn't knock against the mask while they are playing.

    • 4). Tie the other two lace strands through the holes on each side of the shield and tie them tightly to each side of the mask. Again, make sure you string the laces through the wire mesh of the face mask and tie the laces tightly so the shield won't fall off.

    • 5). Trim the ends of the skate laces so they do not obstruct your view while playing. Make sure the knots are tight in the laces before you trim them. Turn the strings around so the knots are tucked under the wire cage on the face mask. This will keep the knots from being in your line of vision.
