How to Detect Mold and Mildew
- 1). Remove the lid from the Petri dish and pour the mold medium into the dish. Do not touch the inside of the dish, as the oils from your hands will contaminate the sampling. The mold medium will attract the mold spores to determine the level of mold in your home.
- 2). Put the lid back on the dish and swirl the dish gently to spread the medium evenly on the bottom of the dish.
- 3). Let the Petri dish sit for an hour to give the medium time to harden.
- 4). Place the dish in an area where you suspect mold is growing. Remove the lid and let it sit uncovered for an hour.
- 5). Replace the lid at the end of the hour and let the Petri dish sit for 48 hours.
- 6). Send the Petri dish to the lab indicated on the mold test kit package and wait for the lab results to be sent, emailed or phoned to you.
