If you are looking for small horse barn plans, have you heard or thought about using shed row horse barns? This type of horse shelter is a great option with regards to cost, the types of materials and space.
They are strong and durable because the main structure uses treated lumber.
It is also recommended to use this same type of higher quality lumber along the bottom of the stall walls, because regular mucking out, washing the stalls, horse manure and urine would otherwise rot untreated wood.
The shed row horse barn has Dutch doors with no aisle and the plans come with an optional tack room and feed room included.
More about that later.
Size of the Barn Basically you should aim to build one stall at least twelve feet wide and anywhere between twelve to sixteen feet for an average sized horse.
If you think you will be stabling a mare with a foal, then increase the dimensions by two feet in both width and length.
Basic Materials Used Treated Lumbar for superstructure and bottom of stall walls Rough cut wood up to the height of five feet on each stall Poles or wire for another three feet above the rough plywood.
Dutch Doors made from either plywood or rough cut Entrance to Barn It might be a good idea to increase the height of the Dutch doors if your plans look a bit low or too narrow.
This makes it easier to get the horse in and out the barn and allows for a lot more light and air to flow through.
Building a Tack or Feed Room The number of horses you have, the amount of tack and what you want to store in this room will determine the size, but generally a 12'x8' will do fine for a small barn size.
It's probably a good idea to cement the floor so your tack doesn't get too dirty or moldy from dust and moisture coming up from the ground.
You can even subdivide this room by putting your saddles on racks on the lower part of the wall and the bridles, martingales, halters and lead reigns above them.
On the other side, try to make a pit out of concrete to store your feed and hay in.
