Is There Anything That Inhibits the Growth of Mold in Homes?

    Humidity

    • Any area with a humidity level above 55 percent is a good place for mold to grow. Buy hygrometers (machines that monitor humidity levels) and dehumidifiers to reduce the humidity.

    Leaks

    • Check your house and plumbing system for leaks; even a small leak can start a big mold problem.

    Ventilation

    • Installing ventilation fans in kitchens and bathrooms can reduce humidity levels and inhibit the growth of mold.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar can inhibit the growth of mold. Spray undiluted vinegar in your shower after each use, and around any area where mold is likely to grow.

    Removal

    • If you do get mold, handle the small problems yourself; scrub non-porous surfaces with the cleanser of your choice, but not ammonia. If your carpets, wallpaper or any other porous surface has mold, remove and replace the item, since mold can't be cleaned from these surfaces.
