    • 1). Call your local "call before you dig number" to locate any buried utility wires. Locate the main breaker box. Locate the breaker that serves the feeder wire box inside the metal shed and turn it off. Put on the safety glasses. Locate the ground wire lug in the feeder box in the metal shed.

    • 2). Select a spot for the ground rod as near the feeder box as possible, inside the building if it has a dirt floor, or outside if it does not. Dig a small hole about six inches deep in that spot.

    • 3). Place the six foot ground rod with the sharp end in the hole holding it in a vertical position. Drive the rod into the ground using the sledge hammer until the end is just above ground level. Connect a ground clamp to the rod.

    • 4). Select a brace or bolt on the metal building near the ground rod. Clean the brace or bolt with emery paper. Connect a ground clamp to the brace or bolt.

    • 5). Strip about one half inch of insulation off a #6 wire and connect it to the ground lug in the feeder box. Leave enough wire to reach the ground clamp on the building.

    • 6). Run the other end of the #6 wire to the ground clamp on the building. Connect the wire to the ground clamp in the same manner.

    • 7). Connect a #6 wire to the ground clamp on the ground rod in the same manner. Run the other end to the ground clamp on the building and connect it. Check all connections to make sure they are tight.
