2010 Tuxedo Cats Picture Gallery: Mamacita
Mamacita was my choice for the fifth Cat of the Week for May, 2010.
Arriving home from work, my wife met me in the driveway and said she wanted to show me something. In our woodpile next to the garage was the neighborhood stray Tuxedo cat with 5 kittens! Mama cat looked a bit ragged and thin. So, besides caring for our own three cats, we began caring for and feeding these additional six!
This continued for a few days, as we started to contact shelters and rescue groups to find out what we could do to find them placement somewhere.
Meanwhile, "Mamacita" would come and go during the day, always returning around dusk to tend to her babies. When she was gone, the kittens would climb up to the top of the logs under the tarp covering to hide.
I made up some "Found Cats!" flyers and put them up around the neighborhood hoping that someone would contact us, but to no avail. Eventually we hooked up with a local rescue group and they came by with a cage. It took a couple of days to trap all of the kittens and have them checked out by a vet and they all got adopted. Now we just had to find a home for Mamacita.
Through the rescue group, we had made an appointment to have her checked out. Upon arrival at the vet, Mamacita bit the vet tech as she was carrying her from a cage in the car into the clinic, then she ran towards a nearby subdivision. Over three weeks later, and after canvassing the neighborhood with flyers, we received a phone call from the vet that a client had sighted Mamacita. I called and talked to a very nice lady, and she agreed to let us put a trap in her yard baited with tuna.
Less than an hour later, we had her!
Back to the vet she went for her spaying and original check-up, and this time in a proper carrier. She was thin, but otherwise perfectly healthy. After a couple of days spent in a cage in our basement, we let her out to explore. She settled in, our cats settled down, and we decided to keep her. Mamacita became one of the family and is the best kitty ever!
