Can Social Bookmarks Still Help You Get More Traffic?

First of all let me tell you right away that when I use the word "traffic" I always use it in the sense of "targeted traffic".
This is a lesson I learned on early in my online-career.
I used to get several hundred visitors a day to some of my websites, and they made me less than $5 per month.
Five dollars per month is okay if you can set up a website in 10 minutes and then leave it and it makes you $60 per year forever, but this was not the case - I invested several weeks in developing these websites.
And every day I checked my stats and was absolutely thrilled to see that more and more visitors kept coming.
But there were no sales.
And very few AdSense clicks.
These sites made me no money, and I later found out that this was because these hundreds of visitors were not looking for what I offered them.
That is why it's so important to have targeted traffic - you can't run a business when all your clients are just window-shopping.
So, having gone off that tangent, let me get back to social bookmarks.
Social bookmarks are a great way to get visitors that WANT what you have to offer, because you can determine the keywords that attract your visitors.
If for example you are selling "titanium golf clubs for lefthanded people" then you can make this a keyword in your social bookmark that gets picked up by the search engines.
Very powerful stuff for niche marketers.
The problem is that it is so effective that it has now gotten pretty much saturated.
So many people are doing it that in order to stand out and still get some of the attention and visitors you need lots of diggs, lots of votes, lots of comments on the social bookmarking sites.
If you want to do that yourself - set up hundreds of accounts, submitted your sites for hundreds of times this will totally tie up your time for several weeks to do for just a handful of websites.
Not a smart business decision.
If you have the budget to outsource social bookmarking that's great - if you find a good SEO company that does this for you, perfect.
But quiet frankly, you'll need to have a very high profit margin, because otherwise this is just too expensive.
Paying $35 for having just one of your sites submitted to $125 social bookmark sites is way too much, because you will need to do this over and over again.
From my personal experience getting a tool that helps you to leverage your time is the best way to go.
I use a social bookmark program that allows me to just put in all the information once (link address, title, description, keywords) and then with the click of a mousebutton it submits it to 20 of the best social bookmarking sites.
(20 doesn't sound a lot, but believe me when I say quality matters more than quantity).
