    Identify Your Strengths

    • One of the first steps to finding employment is to identify all of your skills, talents and strengths. Write everything down so that you can get an at-a-glance look at all your personal assets as a worker. Next, use this information to narrow down a list of positions you want to apply for. For instance, if your skills include keyboarding, organization and office management, you can add administrative assistant, secretary and data entry to your list of potential jobs. Once you decide what types of jobs you want to apply for, craft a resume specific to the type of employment you plan to seek and focus on the skills you've listed.

    Schedule

    • You need to decide on a schedule that fits into your lifestyle before searching for employment. If you are in school or have a family to manage in addition to work, make sure that you're looking for jobs that fit your scheduling needs. This seems like a minor point, but if an employer finds that you have a potential scheduling conflict that could seriously affect chances of getting the job. You should also determine if you want to keep this job in the long-term or only on a temporary basis. For example, some employers hire for seasonal jobs that only last for a few months.

    Ways to Find a Job

    • You have a wide variety of options for finding employment once you've figured out the jobs you want and the schedule to which you can commit. Compile a list of all major online job boards. Visit them to create a detailed profile, including your resume, and narrow down your choices and the radius you're willing to travel for work. Subscribe to any newsletters for job updates based on search parameters. Be patient---according to Marc Cenedella of online job search website TheLadders.com, it could take six to eight weeks or longer to get certain types of jobs. Don't be afraid to walk right into companies in your area that may have open positions and ask to speak with a hiring manager. You can also sign up with an employment agency to increase your chances of finding a job in your desired field.

    Interviewing

    • If you're asked in for an interview you should hone your interviewing and communication skills. Review your resume and write a list of questions you anticipate from the hiring manager. Create a short list of your most valuable strengths that could capture the attention of the interviewer. Be as specific as possible, and if possible give specific real-life examples of your accomplishments in the field. Learn as much as possible about the company where you want to work.
