Hibernation

• Hibernation is the time that most butterflies will be more likely to use a butterfly house. Many butterflies will also use a butterfly house when the days and nights are warmer to roost in. A few species that commonly use butterfly houses to hibernate in are the Mourning Cloak, Hoary Comma and the Gray Comma.
  
  

Shelter

• Butterflies may use a butterfly house to take shelter in when it is raining, snowing or windy, or even on extremely hot days. They may take shelter in them at night, as well. Butterflies also may stop and take a rest in a butterfly house.
  
  

Decoration

• Whether or not butterflies actually use your butterfly house, they can still make a beautiful decoration for any yard or garden. To better attract butterflies, the house should be painted in bright colors, such as red, pink and yellow. Butterfly houses make a wonderful addition to any garden or yard. The can also be given away as gifts as they make charming presents for any bird or garden lover.
  
  

Attracting Butterflies

• A butterfly house should always be mounted in a sunny spot in your garden or yard, as far away from any wind as possible. If there is a spot that is closer to woods, then the house should be placed there. They should be attached to a pole or on a tree, at least 4 feet from the ground. A few slabs of bark can be placed inside the house so that the butterflies have more shelter, as well as something else to hold on to.
