Enjoy Springtime in Monroe, North Carolina
Monroe, North Carolina is an historic town 25 miles southeast of Charlotte. It is close enough to the city to enjoy all its benefits, but far enough outside the hustle and bustle to have its own small town charm. There are several special events going on during the spring that draw visitors to town. Here are some highlights from spring in the Monroe area.
Monroe's 2012 Down to Earth Day Festival and 5K Race are scheduled for April 14. The festival will be held in Monroe's historic downtown area. The focus will be on developing eco-friendly, healthy, and €green€ lifestyles. The 5K Race/Walk will begin at 8am. The other activities will run from 10am-2pm at the Main Street Plaza. Festival attendees can enjoy bluegrass music, food, and crafts. Some fun activities are planned for the kids. There will be recycling opportunities and demonstrations. Plenty of parking is available downtown.
A highlight of spring in the Monroe area is the Queen's Cup Steeplechase, always held the last Saturday in April. This year's 17th annual steeplechase event will take place on April 28 at the Brooklandwood race course in nearby Mineral Springs, North Carolina. Attendees can enjoy beautiful spring weather as they watch magnificent thoroughbred horses compete over a challenging rolling turf course. Horses have to clear a series of 4.5 foot high jumps made of timber or brush. Six races are sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association, and horses compete for more than $90,000 in purse money. After the final race of the afternoon, stay for the traditional Hot Walk Party. This all day outing/lawn party is an annual rite of spring in the greater Charlotte area and draws visitors from all over the South. It is a stylish sporting and social event akin to the Kentucky Derby. General admission badges are $40 for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Attendees should bring their own seating. Tailgating packages are also available.
Kick back and relax on May 5 at the Beach, Blues and BBQ Festival, a family friendly event held on Main Street in downtown Monroe. Activities begin at 11am, and the party goes until 7pm. Dozens of teams will compete for top prize money as they BBQ chicken, pork, and beef brisket. There is also a dessert competition, so attendees will enjoy plenty of delicious food. Non-commercial arts and crafts vendors will be selling their wares, and a kids' area will feature rides, games, and €Touch-a-Truck.€ Three bands will provide musical entertainment all afternoon. Homemade Jamz Band will perform blues from noon-2pm. Da Throwback Band will play a variety of high energy music from 2:30-4:30pm, and Coastline will provide beach music from 5-7pm. This festival is a great way to transition from spring to summer.
There is plenty going on in Monroe this spring. Come out and enjoy one of these popular events.
