Rarely Known Baby Facts

Many people assume that babies are only about diapers, breast milk (or formula) and long naps. Have you learned why babies' bodies move the way they move? Do you understand how babies develop? So many people do not understand the little things about why a baby grows the way it does. For others though, the subject of infant and early childhood development is something that they make the time to learn about.

Every day is a surprise when you have a baby! Whether or not you are ready to know this, at least fifty percent of what you think you know about babies is wrong. You will probably learn at least a few new things when you read this article.

Did you know already that babies are not very good at telling colors apart? Not only does it take a while for the synapses in a baby's brain to fully connect, their eyes take a few months to mature as well. This is one of the reasons why babies respond better to primary colors whey they are used in a room or on toys. Bold reds, blues, greens and even black and white are best for babies. In the eyes of a baby, a lot of pastel colors look pretty much the same.

Babies can sense light changes even in the womb. There are millions of fibers and nerves that make up your eyes. You would be surprised by just how much coordination is needed for your eyes to work properly. A baby has eyes that are useful within a few months of being conceived. By about six months into your pregnancy your baby will be sensitive to light. Another amazing "eye fact" about babies: most Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes but will "settle in" to their permanent eye color by the time they are a few months old. The blue color in your baby's eyes will probably change if you are Caucasian. So do what you can not to let your heart get set on having a blue eyed child. That color will probably change. Did you realize that some people give birth to babies who already have teeth? On the other hand, other babies don't even start teething until they are more than a year old

In spite of taking a few months to start forming words that adults can identify, the range of sounds babies can make is amazing. This is due to the fact that a baby's larynx won't be finished developing until long after the baby has been born. The flexibility of a new voice box is what makes the baby's range better than an adult's range. Babies quickly start to assign the sounds they make to the things that they want or need. This is the way babies teach their parents how to get them what they want-as long as the parents are paying attention they can usually figure it out within a moment or two. A baby's first word is usually one that he can make using the consonants made by the front of his mouth and a couple of vowel sounds. It is because of this that a baby's first word is usually "dada" and not "mama": dada is easier to imitate and is almost always a surprise to both the parent and the baby!

Did anybody ever tell you that when babies first start to grow, they grow a tail along with their other limbs? It is absolutely true! As your baby's cells divide, the major organs (heart, lungs, brain) begin to form and so does a tail!

It is easier for babies to learn how to communicate with their parents physically than it is for them to learn how to do so verbally. This is why so many parents teach their children sign language when they are babies. Signing programs teach babies how to use physical actions for things like hunger, thirst, tiredness, needing a diaper change, etc which helps them communicate better with their parents. Some research has even shown that babies who learn to communicate with the baby signs program (before they learn to talk) go on to have stronger communication skills that people who were not taught physical forms of communication at an early age. Babies are really fun to learn about. Nobody knows for sure exactly how they learn or how fast they pick things up. There is nothing like watching a baby grow from an infant into an adult-it is a fascinating and mind boggling process!

There are all sorts of great baby facts that are not part of most people's common knowledge. Watching babies grow is incredibly interesting. Watching your kids develop and grow is more fun when you know what is happening!
