How to File for Disability in MS
- 1). Call the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (1-800-772-1213) and set up an appointment to apply for disability. It is possible to set up an appointment online, but getting someone to actually talk to in case you have questions helps begin the process more smoothly.
- 2). Keep your scheduled appointment time. Appointments are first-come first-served, and it you miss yours, you'll be back at the end of the line. Persons filing a claim either receive an interview at one of Mississippi's 24 Social Security office or by phone.
- 3). Have medical records ready to submit with your application or have them forwarded directly from your doctor's office if you are applying by phone. This will lessen the wait time for a decision, since all paperwork must be in before your claim is processed.
- 4). Fill out any additional paperwork received at the Social Security office in a timely fashion and submit.
- 5). Learn about your rights to an appeal and the appeal process while waiting for the initial decision on your claim. Often the initial claim is denied. Many people who apply for disability go through the appeals process, and getting informed ahead of time really helps decrease overall wait time for benefit payments to begin.
