How to Make Dry Hair Healthy
- 1). Switch to a gentler shampoo. Many shampoos contain alcohol, which can strip your hair of moisture and create static electricity within it. Before buying your next bottle of shampoo, read the ingredients and choose a shampoo that contains little or no alcohol. In addition to changing your shampoo, you might want to switch to shampooing every other day. Shampooing too often can strip your hair of much-needed natural oils.
- 2). Look for a high-quality moisturizing conditioner. Choose a thick conditioner with little or no alcohol. After shampooing, run the conditioner through your hair, paying special attention to the ends, where moisture is needed most. Leave it in your hair for 3 to 5 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
- 3). Be gentle when you brush. Though you may have heard that you're supposed to brush your hair for 100 strokes each time, most stylists agree that, when it comes to brushing, less is more. Dry hair is fragile and prone to break, and over-brushing only makes a dry-hair situation worse. When you do brush, do it gently and use a vented hairbrush with rubber-coated tips to minimize breakage and split ends.
- 4). Give yourself a conditioning hair treatment. Run a good amount of moisturizing conditioner through your hair and pin it up or secure it with a shower cap. Leave the conditioner in your hair for up to 1 hour, then rinse with warm water. If the weather is nice, take your conditioned hair out in the sun for up to 1 hour for a naturally heated conditioning hair treatment.
- 5). Nourish your hair with banana and avocado. In a bowl, mash an overripe banana and a ripe avocado together until blended. Spread the banana-and-avocado mixture in your hair and work it through to the tips. Pin up your hair or secure with a shower cap and leave in for up to 1 hour before rinsing with warm water.
