Lutein is Fast Becoming the Solution For Macular Degeneration Disease

Through the past few years scientists have been studying the applications of lutein for macular degeneration.
Some researchers have even gone to the extent of refereeing to lutein therapy as the anti-ageing ophthalmology.
It is a disease better known as AMD or age-related macular degeneration and is grouped along with all the other lifestyle diseases.
In many cases, AMD is a lifestyle disease because it develops from bad eating habits coupled along with other unhealthy lifestyle factors.
These include smoking, drinking excessively and eating too much junk food.
Researchers were first attracted to the relation of lutein and macular degeneration because lutein is an antioxidant and is very important to the composition of the macula - the central part of the retina.
The retina is composed of tissue that is very sensitive to light and is the inner lining of the eye.
The macula is a very tiny spot in the retina and is associated with central vision.
When light strikes the retina there is a domino effect of chemical reactions that give rise to many electrical processes in the eye and these culminate in signals to the visual part of the brain.
These chemical reactions give rise to free radicals that are nothing but unstable atoms.
These free radicals do a lot of damage to the eye tissue and need to be "neutralized" as soon as they are created.
There is only one way to neutralize a free radical and that is to supply it with the required free electron.
Free electrons are abundantly present in antioxidants and lutein is natures preferred antioxidant so much so that it is abundantly present in the retina as well as in all the green vegetables we eat.
Here is where bad eating habits are responsible for AMD.
There is a direct relationship between lutein and macular degeneration.
The less of lutein in the retina the faster vision defects will set in.
This is a well know fact to doctors and researchers and so they advise an increase intake of lutein for macular degeneration.
Because unhealthy eating habits are the cause of lutein deficiency people in their old age have to resort to lutein supplements in the form of lutein pills.
However, were they to be a bit cautious they would never find the need for lutein supplement pills.
A diet rich in green leafy vegetables and fruit through out life will provide the much needed 6 mg of lutein and other minerals needed for perfect vision even after superannuating.
Eating a lot of vegetables and fruit will keep lutein and zeaxanthin deficiency at bay.
The internet is full of lutein and zeaxanthin deficiency solutions in the form of lutein and zeaxanthin pills, some of which can be confusing.
The site below is a good resource for more information that educates one on the effects of lutein and how to choose the best lutein supplement over the counter.
