How to Use a Modular Crimping Tool
- 1). Cut the ends of the wires cleanly in order to remove any corroded or damaged wires. Strip at least 1/4 inch of the insulation from the ends of the wires with a wire stripper while making sure that you don't damage the copper strands.
- 2). Identify the wires. The color of the insulation of each wire will tell you which pin in the modular plug to connect it to. This varies by interface; a particular interface may have more than one color scheme for its wires.
- 3). Arrange the wires neatly so that they don't cross or overlap. Make sure that each wire is slightly separated from the adjacent wires. Orient the modular plug and insert the wires into the plug so that each wire goes into the correct channel. Slide the wires into the plug as indicated by that particular plug.
- 4). Place the modular plug into the correct socket of the modular crimping tool if it has more than one socket. The correct socket can be identified by the number of wires in the interface. For example, an RJ45 cable has eight wires, so you should place it in the socket made for modular plugs with eight wires.
- 5). Squeeze the modular crimping tool to crimp the modular plug. Depending on the combination of crimping tool and plug, you may be able to squeeze the handles completely closed. In other cases, you may need to carefully monitor the pressure you apply in order to avoid damaging the modular plug.
