The word police equipment covers a whole lot of things like police weapons, communication equipments, fingerprinting kits, police lights, narcotic pouches, and tactical clothes and boots. Each is important in its own way in helping them discharge their duties. Still, police weapons are highly crucial for any form of action and can be considered the most important among police equipment. Without high precision weapons that are in good condition, it is impossible for the police to perform even in a limited way, let alone excel.

Police weapons may be lethal weapons or non-lethal weapons. A lethal weapon is mandatory police equipment that most policemen carry while on duty and even during non-duty hours. The policemen in USA generally use a handgun or pistol, the type of gun that allows easy use as it can be held in one hand and discharged, unlike the larger rifles and shotguns that can be fired only using both hands. Besides the handgun that they carry on their person, some police officers have the right to carry semiautomatic rifles or shotguns in their vehicles for extra security.

The weapons other than guns, which form part of the police equipment, are mostly non-lethal by definition though the way in which they are used could sometimes lead to fatality. These are usually things like batons, tear gas, electroshock guns, and pepper spray.

A baton is important police equipment for policemen on patrol duty and also for those controlling a rioting mob. It is a stick of wood or metal ranging in height from 1' to 3' and is also known as truncheon, nightstick, blackjack, or is referred to as just stick. Baton is also known as an impact weapon. Collapsible batons can be easily accommodated into the duty belt of policemen even when they are in the seated position.

Tear gas is also non-lethal police equipment. It is a type of gas that is sprayed by policemen for controlling a rioting mob, especially when the crowd turns violent. It is also sometimes used for self-defense. The gas contains some chemical compounds, which causes crying, breathing difficulty, and sneezing in the victim by irritating the membranes of eyes and nose. It is also known as mace when marketed as an aerosol spray.

An electroshock gun, commonly known as taser, is a police equipment used to temporarily incapacitate people who do not cooperate, or are fleeing or belligerent. The weapon uses a high voltage current to bring about what is called neuromuscular incapacitation, by temporarily weakening the muscle triggering ability of the body. The weapon is used by firing a projectile at the target. The projectile administers a shock through a thin wire when it comes into contact with the human body.

Besides these commonly used police equipment, special operation teams like Special Weapons And Tactics, or SWAT for short, use more heavy-duty weapons. Since these troops will be involved in high risk operations like rescuing hostages or fighting insurgents or terrorists, their weapons are also accordingly more powerful and include grenades, submachine guns, high powered rifles, riot control equipment, and specialized body armor.
