Henderson, Nevada is a young city. It became a town in the 1940s for the purpose of supplying magnesium to the whole United States of America. Magnesium was very much needed during the Second World War so though a small city, Henderson had a hand in the defense of the country. After the war, however, the citys existence became endangered. In 1947, the city was saved from becoming a discarded war property through the signing of a bill by Governor Vail Pittman. The town finally became a city on April 16, 1953. It became the second biggest city in Nevada.
