The name 'Gurgaon' has been attributed to Guru Dronacharya, a character from the great Hindu epic, Mahabharata. He was the royal guru of Pandavas and Kauravas, and imparted them training in warfare. As a token of appreciation for his training, the Pandavas gifted Guru Dronacharya an entire village. This village came to be known as 'Guru Gram', which literally translates as 'Village of the Guru'. Over the years, this name got distorted to Gurgaon. During the reign of Mughal emperor, Akbar, Gurgaon district was a part of Delhi and Agra. With the decline of Mughal empire, this district was in a disturbed state as a result of constant rivalry between the neighbouring chiefs. The treaty of Surji Arjungaon and Sindhia brought the region under British rule. They divided the area into groups of small villages, called 'Parganas'. Each pargana was handed over to local chiefs in return for military services provided by them. In the years that followed, these villages came under direct control of the British. In the mid-twentieth century, about 9 villages of Gurgaon district were transferred to Rajasthan state. The district was further divided to form a new district of Faridabad on 15th of August, 1979.

A humid subtropical climate can be experienced in Gurgaon with an influence of monsoons. The city has four seasons - summer, autumn, winter and spring. Monsoons step in towards the end of summers. Winters in this part of the world are cold and foggy, although a few sunny days can be witnessed. Some amount of rainfall can be experienced during winters owing to the Western Disturbance. The spring and autumn seasons are the best times to visit Gurgaon, as the atmosphere around this time of the year is mild and pleasant, with lower levels of humidity. Ultra-modern facilities are provided by the luxury hotels in Gurgaon for their guests, in addition to an elegant ambience in the rooms and suites. Tourists travelling to Gurgaon can book their accommodations in such hotels to have luxurious stays during their time spent in this city.
