Simple Homemade Compost System

    • 1). Find an appropriate location for the compost system in your backyard. Keep it close to the house so transporting materials from the kitchen is quick and convenient. You will need a circular area that is about 3 feet in diameter.

    • 2). Assemble your tools in the compost site. Stand in the area you'd like to create the compost and lay a wooden garden stake at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions.

    • 3). Drive the stakes into the ground using your rubber mallet. They should go at least 1 foot into the earth to be firmly anchored. You should now have four garden stakes standing vertically and positioned across from one another.

    • 4). Gather your chicken wire and carefully bring to the stakes. Chicken wire can by sharp, so wear your gloves while working with it.

    • 5). Wrap the chicken wire around the four stakes. Chicken wire naturally rolls in on itself, so use this rolling motion to help wrap the wire in a circular shape around the stakes.

    • 6). Use your staple gun to drive several staples into the length of each stake. Start at the bottom and staple the wire into place every few inches.

    • 7). Trim off any excess wire using your wire cutters.

    • 8). Fill with organic material and turn regularly. When you're ready to remove the composted material, snip the chicken wire along one of the stakes and peel it back. Remove the compost and use it on your lawn or garden.
