Tips on Kitchen Storage
- Maximize your cabinet space by using its height as well as its width. Buy nesting bowls that let you easily stack one on top of the other, or "nest" the bowls you already have. Purchase or build a shelf that divides the vertical space in a cabinet. Stack plates underneath the shelf, and smaller plates or bowls above.
If your spices are in a cabinet, use the vertical space to help you find them easily. Buy inexpensive, graduated plastic shelves that fit inside the cabinet and allow you to stair-step the spices for better viewing. If your spices are out on the countertop, a tall, round spice display will take up less space than other types; it also spins, so you can locate spices quickly. - Most people have a silverware tray for forks, spoons and knives, but a tray with larger spaces can also help you find your cooking utensils when you need them. Dividing your utensils into separate sections saves you from rummaging through an entire drawer to find that spatula you're looking for.
A wire basket or bin that attaches to the inside of your lower cabinet doors can hold anything from pot lids to boxes of baggies to foil and plastic wrap. Some plastic grocery bag dispensers have a narrow profile and can attach to a cabinet door, giving you an out-of-the-way place to store the bags until you need them. - A rolling cart adds movable storage space to your kitchen. If it has a wood or plastic top, it can double as extra counter space or serve as a home for appliances that would otherwise end up on your countertops. The shelves or baskets underneath can hold cookbooks, kitchen towels or even potatoes and onions.
Pot racks free up a lot of cabinet space and add a decorative touch. If your pots and pans aren't attractive, however, this may not be the best option. Store pots, pans and appliances that are used infrequently elsewhere in your home to leave room in the kitchen for items that you use more often.
If you have the room, consider purchasing a free-standing piece of furniture for additional kitchen storage. Pie safes or other cabinets can serve as pantries. A kitchen cabinet topped with butcher block can be used as an island, offering storage along with counter space.
