Ideas for Prayer Chairs for Children

    Name and Purpose

    • Create a wooden chair for the child and airbrush the child's name and the purpose on the chair, for example, "Ann's Prayer Chair." By putting the child's name on the chair, the child will see the chair as being his own. By giving the chair a purpose, the child will know that he can sit in the chair whenever he has something he wants to talk to God about. Decorate the chair with clouds and angels to enhance the visualization of the prayer chair.

    Prayers

    • Write short prayers on the prayer chair for the child to recite. For example, on one arm of the chair you can write, "I pray for mommy, I pray for daddy or I pray for others." By writing the short prayers, your child will always remember to pray for others, and he can do so without you coaching him along.

    Canopy

    • Build a canopy made out of a prayer shawl and attach the canopy to the prayer chair. You can explain to the child that whenever he sits under the canopy he is in a secret "prayer closet" where he can talk to God without being seen by others. This method can encourage the child to use the prayer chair because he will truly think he is in a secret place and no one can see him except God.
