Dumbbell training is incredibly effective for building muscle.
Matter of fact it is the BEST way to build muscle for the following reasons.

Range of Motion is FAR superior to machines.
You get so much more out of a dumbbell training motion than you do with machines.
You are working your muscle more completely and getting a greater range of motion which contributes greatly to increased gains.
Try performing a machine chest press and compare that to a dumbbell chest press.
Feeling is believing, and you will definitely notice the superior power and effectiveness of dumbbells.

Free Weights are the BEST for building muscle.
It is well known throughout the world of bodybuilding, weightlifting, power lifting, Olympic lifting, and even average gym rat lifting, that free weights are the absolute best way, and fastest way, to build muscle.
What is not mentioned often, is that dumbbell training is a huge part of free weight training.
While barbells play their part, you can achieve a complete free weight workout with dumbbells alone.

Convenience and Cost CANNOT be beat! Think about it: Gym memberships, weight lifting equipment, expensive exercise contraptions on TV, they all require one thing - a whole lot of money.
Dumbbells, on the other hand, require very little money, yet you can do practically everything with them, not to mention they are far superior to everything else.
Also think about storage.
Equipment requires space, while dumbbells require very little space.
You also have the convenience and option of working out right at home, as opposed to driving to a gym and paying for a membership.
