There is always something that needs filing, sorting, and storing - no matter how neat and obsessively tidy a person is, it is good to have extra storage handy. Office furniture is used for various purposes, one of which is for putting things in order. Shelves are sometimes included in the general structure of an establishment, but can also be purchased at the home section of a department store, ready-made. Drawers are also common storage items which provide more safety and security to the contents. Filing cabinets are just as conventional as these other items, especially in an office. Paper is used for myriad purposes in the workplace and the usual problem is how to keep them organized and where to place them so that they are safe but also easy to retrieve.

The variations of file cabinets depend mainly on the number of drawers; a cabinet could have two to six drawers, or even more. Cabinets are very versatile because you can have different size drawers built into them if you wish. Change the System: Re-Organizing Your Filing Cabinets

A typical worker makes use of a file cabinet either at home or in an office. The steel variety is almost always associated with a corporate office setting because they are spacious, durable, and practically impervious to external elements. There is at least one file cabinet in every office, but despite its presence and usefulness, it still doesn't guarantee an organized work space. The presence of filing cabinets does not always indicate the presence of an organizational scheme. If you open some of these drawers, you will find piles of paper carelessly dumped inside without any order. A systematic file management scheme also requires easy retrieval of files when they are needed. There has to be a workflow of some sort that will determine what kind of file cabinets you need. Indexing is an important part of the filing process; hence, you must come up with a map for documents as they get around your office. It is not always possible to establish a fixed indexing system because new categories may crop up from time to time. What is possible, though, is coming up with a foundation for you indexing scheme - a few general headings which can be expanded in time. Naturally, it is advisable to place urgent and frequently accessed files in the front of the middle drawer so that they are not too inconvenient to retrieve.
