Grants for Civil Engineering Students
- If you are a civil engineering major who plans to design and build dams, you may be eligible to receive financial aid of up to $10,000 through the Association of State Dam Safety Officials Scholarship Program. You must be an undergraduate of senior standing in order to qualify, and must also have a GPA of 2.5 or better. Scholarship applications may be downloaded from the Association of State Dam Safety Officials website (damsafety.org), and must be submitted each year by March 31.
- The American Society of Civil Engineers offers several programs to both undergraduate and graduate-level civil engineering majors throughout the United States. Available undergraduate tuition grants range in value from $2,000 to $3,000. ASCE tuition grants for graduate students range in value from $2,000 to $6,000. Applicants must be student members of the ASCE in order to be eligible. Scholarship applications are available on the ASCE website (asce.org); specific eligibility requirements and application deadlines vary by scholarship program.
- If you are a female civil engineering student, consider applying for scholarships available from the Society of Women Engineers. The SWE offers many tuition grants available to engineering students in all branches of the field, as well as some limited to students in specific branches of engineering. Scholarships reserved specifically for civil engineering majors include the $5,000 General Electric Women's Network Scholarship and the $1,500 Elizabeth McLean Memorial Scholarship. Applications are available on the SWE website (societyofwomenengineers.swe.org).
- Certain tuition grants are open only to civil engineering majors in specific states. For example, Kentucky residents who pursue a degree in civil engineering at a state institution and pledge to work for the transportation cabinet upon graduation may be eligible for support of around $5,000 per year. The Virginia Department of Transportation offers a similar program that provides support of up to $3,500 per semester. The Illinois Department of Transportation offers tuition grants of up to $7,000 to civil engineering students within the state.
