How to Air Out a Musty Suitcase
- 1). Take the musty suitcase outdoors. Using a whisk broom, vigorously brush the suitcase's fabric surfaces to detach mildew spores.
- 2). Kill most of mildew spores on the suitcase first before airing it out. Start by filling a pail with 1 cup of water and 1 cup of denatured alcohol. Mix the alcohol solution thoroughly.
- 3). Moisten a clean rag in the denatured alcohol solution. Wring out excess solution and wipe down wipe the musty suitcase. Gently rub the lightly damped rag over the suitcase's fabric surfaces, being cautious not to soak the fabric.
- 4). Lay the open suitcase outdoors in direct sunlight. Air out the suitcase for 4 hours to kill remaining mildew.
- 5). Inspect the suitcase for lingering mildew. If the musty odor lingers, place an electric fan next to the open suitcase to speed up the drying process. Leave the suitcase exposed to the fan's airflow until the musty odor disappears.
