As a relatively undeveloped state with many small towns, Maine plays host to a bevy of charming settlements. While many of the more notorious lie along the rugged coastline, the inland is also home to villages of quaint and historic character. These villages each celebrate their own unique culture while maintaining something of the equally distinctive larger region to which they are a part. - The town of Camden, Maine has become an international tourist destination. Ranked by "Yankee Magazine" as being among the top 25 foliage towns in the nation, Camden is located on Maine's central coastline, north of Portland and on the massive West Penobscot Bay. The town has a small fleet of windjammer schooners at its docks, a 790-foot mountain on its outskirts and a classic New England historic downtown replete with church spires, small shops and ancient cottages.
- Castine is a tiny village located on an island in the eastern portion of the Penobscot Bay. Roughly 7.9 square miles, Castine is most famous for its historic Forts George and Madison, built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, respectively. The island is also host to the Maine Maritime Academy, which accounts for a significant portion of the population.
- Located in the heart of the Maine countryside, northeast of New Hampshire's White Mountains, Phillips is a simple, quiet, out of the way town. Not a huge tourist destination, it is an excellent location for someone truly looking to get away from modern society. It boasts a small, welcoming community and is in close proximity to a variety of outdoor activities on the local Sandy River.
- Northeast Harbor is a quiet and remote village located on Mt. Desert Island, on the immediate outskirts of internationally known Acadia National Park. Typically less crowded with tourists than nearby Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor has gained a reputation for its reclusive, famous and wealthy summer inhabitants.
