Garden games can improve fitness

Do your children get as much exercise as they could do? Many parents have become worried about the fitness levels of their kids and with good reason. Recent studies have shown that childhood obesity has been on the rise and that it's leading to more and more serious health problems in later life.

That's the sort of statement that's enough to make us all sit back and think about our own children. It's natural that we should consider the lives that they are leading and what impact we are having on their futures.

Are we, for instance, ensuring that they spend enough time staying fit? If your children spend a lot of time indoors playing computer games, or maybe watching a lot of television, then it may be that they are not spending enough time being active.

It's important that we focus on ensuring that they have a balanced lifestyle. That doesn't mean that we should ban the use of the television or newer technologies - that's going a step too far.

But it does mean that we should be looking to encourage them to lead a healthier life. The use of garden games can be an important step to achieving that. Games played in the garden or in the wider outdoors are likely to provide a much higher level of activity than indoor alternatives.

That means that they provide a great opportunity - they allow you the chance to introduce your children to activities that are fun to take part in but that will also provide a higher level of exercise.

You can help to improve their fitness levels by showing them how much fun can be had using trampolines, climbing frames, swings and slides. As you can see, each of these activities can show that getting more exercise needn't be a chore - it doesn't have to be boring.

Once kids experience outdoor games of this type they often start to see just how much fun they can be. Getting to a position where your children actually shun video games in favour of playing in the garden is certainly an achievable goal.

By demonstrating how much fun can be had in the garden, you can help your children to find new levels of fitness and fun.
