Juniper Bush Removal
- Herbicide will certainly take the least effort of all juniper bush removal methods. It is particularly well suited for small, young juniper plants. Simply apply herbicide and then remove the dead plant. Herbicide is not a good option if you are planning on planting new growth on the spot where the juniper was. It is better suited for straightforward brush eradication.
- Juniper bush can be removed with the assistance of an automobile, preferably a truck. The juniper is attached to the back bumper or tow bar of the automobile with a chain or rope, and then the vehicle moves forward until the juniper bush is removed. This is not an optimal method of removal, as it can result in damage to your automobile and/or yard. If opting for this strategy, wet the area around the bush, and be sure to use a vehicle that is suited for towing.
- In most cases, it will be best to remove your juniper bushes by hand. This is admittedly time-consuming and more laborious than other methods. However, it will enable you to avoid the use on herbicides around your home. It is also most effective for preventing new growth, and carries no risk of damaging your automobile. With this method, you will dig around the plant by hand, cutting roots as you go, until the bush is loosened and you can wedge a tool underneath the root ball. At that point, you should be able to lever the juniper bush from the ground.
- You will need a sprayer if you choose to use a liquid herbicide. If towing the juniper bush out from the ground, a strong rope or chain will be needed. If possible, borrow or rent a tractor; otherwise use a truck rated for towing. There is an assortment of tools that you can use if digging up juniper bushes by hand. While you may opt for the standard dego hoe, a dutch hoe will be better for slicing small roots. A shovel is useful for clearing dirt out from around the juniper bush, and is the best tool for prying up the root ball. Mattocks are very useful for cutting and prying at the roots of larger juniper bushes, but a pick will be the best choice for very old bushes.
