Compost bins are ideal to have in every home.
The composter is one effective way to help reduce the food waste and convert them into healthy organic compost with the help of our little creatures, the earthworm.
Not only this helps to recycle our food waste and thus helps to protect our environment, but also the organic compost is very good for the plants as well.
The compost is free from any chemicals and helps to promote the growth of healthy plants as it is highly nutritious.
So the worms help to produce organic compost at home and thus save you money from buying fertilizers which may have chemical content.
Regardless of where you live whether in a house or an apartment, the compost bins do not take up a lot of floor space.
It usually measures around 16″ x16″ X 21″ for a 3 tray system.
So the compost bin could easily fit even in the small apartment.
The trays are expandable upwards which mean you could easily accommodate more worms to produce more organic compost by adding additional trays on top of the existing ones normally up to 5 trays.
The compost bin normally comes with a 4 legged stands and the lowest container is a special tray which comes with a spigot.
The function of this special collection tray is that it helps to collect compost fluid commonly known as compost tea which drops to the bottom most tray from the upper trays.
Using the spigot, the compost tea can be drained off into empty bottles and can be used on the plants as nutritious liquid.
On top of the special tray, you can put the detachable trays on top of each other.
The trays are normally lined up with bedding materials such as some soil, sand and old shredded newspaper as the bedding.
Food waste which are ideal for the worms is preferably cut into small tiny pieces to facilitate the worms in eating and digesting it.
The food waste should be mixed and buried among the soil and shredded papers so as to avoid the nasty smell.
Also it should be noted that only give enough food waste to the worms.
Give only adequate amount of what the worms can handle.
Otherwise it could be a breeding ground for maggots too.
Once the food in the second lowest container on top of the special collection container has finished, the worms would migrate upwards through the bottom holes of the next container up.
This container would also have to be lined up with the proper bedding material too.
Once the worms have moved upwards, what is left in the container is the healthy home made organic compost.
This can easily be skimmed and collected and be used immediately to your plants.
The compost bin is a no mess and easy to manage and help produce your own organic compost at home.
