How to Light a Flare
- 1). Locate a flat area to place the flare away from any vegetation, about 100 feet from your vehicle.
- 2). Remove the cap from the end of the flare.
- 3). Hold the flare out from the body with your shoulders blocking any oncoming wind. This prevents sparks from flying into your face during the lighting process.
- 4). Scrape the rough end of the flare against the pavement, or against any available coarse surface, to light the flare. Light it by moving the flare away from your body, not toward it.
- 5). Point the flame down until you are in the location where you wish to place the flare. Set the flare down with the flame up, keeping your face away from the flame.
- 6). Tap the burning end of the flare on the ground to extinguish it.
