How to Remove Tree Stumps Naturally
- 1). Dig with a shovel around the tree stump to expose the top of the roots.
- 2). Cut the exposed roots with the shovel and root saw.
- 3). Pull the roots out of the ground with the grub hoe, and pile them in a compost pile.
- 4). Dig farther once the top layers of roots have been removed and cut, and remove the next layer of roots. Continue this process until all roots have been removed and the bulk of the stump is loose from the ground.
- 5). Acquire a burning permit from the local fire marshall.
- 6). Chop a hole into the center of the remaining stump. Fill the bottom of the hole with a thin layer of lighter fluid and light the stump on fire with matches. After the initial flaring of the lighter fluid burns down, the stump should smolder until completely burned away. This may take several days and it's important to keep an eye on the progress of the stump. The process of removing the roots will create a dirt fire barrier.
- 7). Fill in the hole left by the burned out stump with black dirt, and plant with grass seed or till up more dirt and create a garden or flower bed.
