Description of the Palm Tree Fruit
- Coconut palm trees, Cocos nucifera, produce coconut fruits, or coconuts. Coconuts are one of the largest types of palm tree fruit at up to a foot in diameter, according to the University of Florida. Coconuts are oval and covered in a hard shell. The fruit has a layer of inner flesh eaten by humans, crushed to create coconut milk or scraped into coconut flakes.
- Acai berries are another type of palm tree fruit. These are produced by the acai palm, which grows in the rainforest of Brazil. Acai berries taste like chocolate and cloves, and these berries are used as a component in health drinks because they contain antioxidant chemicals, according to Indiana University.
- Dates are also produced by palm trees. Dates are a sweet snack food found in grocery stores. This palm is the Phoenix dactylifera, or the edible date, according to Purdue University. Dates are small, brown oblong fruits that are about an inch in diameter and about 3 inches long. Dates are popular in Middle Eastern, Indian, and African cuisines.
- Not all types of palm tree fruit are used in human food. The Canary Island date palm, Phoenix canariensis, is often used as an ornamental palm and is widely seen decorating landscapes. This palm also produces date fruits, which are round and bright orange. Although this tree is attractive to gardeners, it produces large amounts of these fruits. The ripe fruits fall from the tree, explode, and create a sticky yellow-orange mess.
- The African oil palm is grown for its oil. Known as Elaeis guineensis Jacq, this palm tree produces small, oblong orange fruits. Oil palm fruits are oily and greasy, unlike the other types of palm fruits. If not harvested, they will drop to the ground and spread oil. According to the University of Georgia, an oil palm may contain up to 300 fruits.
