Still Scary: The Grudge 3 DVD
Another Grudge is finally out and conveniently straight to DVD. Released May 12, 2009, Grudge 3 was produced by Takashi Shimizu. This guy is all about the grudge! He directed the first two and wrote the original Japanese film for which the Grudge is based, named Ju-On. His stepping back as director allowed Toby Wilkins to jump in that spot. Shimizu also wrote The Grudge 3 with Brad Keene, a screenwriter credited with writing "Gravedancers" and "From Within".
The series of events in The Grudge 3 begin a few months after the story ends in The Grudge 2. The backdrop for this movie is still in Chicago, where the curse was brought in The Grudge 2 by the young schoolgirl Allison who was still being tormented after fleeing Tokyo. The surviving character of The Grudge 2, Jake Kimball, has been placed in a psychiatric institution under the care of Dr. Ann Sullivan played by Shawnee Smith.
Jake spills his nightmarish tale to Dr. Sullivan. She, of course, doesn't believe a word of what happened to his family. Then she witnesses him being attacked by the unseeable will of the infamous Kayako from both previous Grudge films.
Kayako's sister, Naoko sees a newspaper in Japan. So much has happened in America. Naoko knows it is time to make the madness end, and she knows how to do it. She will go to America and do what she can to end the curse.
From Japan all the way to that apartment in Chicago, Naoko makes her way to face the curse. In the apartment originally in Grudge 2, she comes into contact with the landlord and his kids. While becoming familiar with the family she becomes very close to the older girl Lisa, and comes to see that little Rose is in contact with the spirit world. All this time the curse is going full throttle at the family.
Rose can end the curse by drinking Kayako's blood. This must happen while they perform an exorcism. It all goes badly wrong. Max, the father of the two girls, falls into complete insanity and manages to kill Naoko. Meanwhile the exorcism continues and actually works. The curse is gone. Or is it? Another curse comes into existence because of what happened to Naoko.
For anyone who was into the Grudge series, this movie is a must see. The previous movies left some mystery that this one concludes. It also feels like the chance of more stories are possible.
