Though there are many chemicals in common, the chemical composition of pipe tobacco and cigarette tobacco is slightly different,because of processing procedures. Pipe tobacco is treated with a food-based casing that causes a distinctive aroma when burned. Cigarettes are made from finely ground tobacco leaves that are dried and rolled into a cylindrical shape, usually with a filter on one end. Tobacco that is used in cigarettes is treated with chemicals after harvesting to yield a flavored product. Menthol is a common flavor used in cigarettes. Pipe tobacco is treated with flavoring agents during the growing period so that they will fully saturated with flavor. - The flavoring that is added to pipe tobacco during the growing period or chemicals that are added to cigarette tobacco during harvesting impacts the aroma of the tobacco when burned. Pipe tobacco is generally thought to have a more pleasant aroma than cigarettes.
