For a beginner, the chakras seem a strange, elusive concept.
Yet, from a yogi perspective, the chakras form the core of human existence.
All life forms consists of energy.
The human body is no exception.
Have you every walked into a room, in the midst of an argument and felt the tension and stress in the air? Or do you know people who have such a calm presence that you instantly feel relaxed and peaceful when you see them? That is energy and everyone sends out and receives energy.
Yogis view the human body as consisting of a physical body and an energy body.
What Is The Energy Body? Yoga philosophy sees the human energy body consisting of 3 main layers, or bodies, consisting of layers known as sheaths.
In brief, you have the Physical Body, which houses the Food Sheath; the Astral Body, which consists of the Pranic Sheath, the Mental Sheath and the Intellectual Sheath.
The third body, is known as the Causal Body or as the Seed Body, which holds the Bliss Sheath.
Where Are The Chakras Located? Chakras, also known as energy centres, are an essential part of your energy body.
They are seen as concentrated energetic wheels of light in the pranic sheath of the astral body, along the Sushumna, the central canal.
This area relates to the spine in the physical body.
A Sanskrit word, chakra means "wheels of light.
" How Many Chakras Are There? There are seven major chakras which run from the base of your spine to your crown.
The chakras are centred around the base of your spine, lower abdomen, solar plexus, heart, throat, forehead and crown of your head.
Energy vibrates.
As the energy rises up through the chakras, from the base to your crown, they vibrate at a higher and faster speed.
And become more subtle as they rise through the astral body.
The traditional purpose of yoga is to merge, unite with the divine.
Thus, from a yogic perspective, the chakras represent centres of spiritual consciousness in the body.
The goal of your yoga practice is to use yoga techniques (breathing exercises, yoga postures, meditation and eating wholesome foods) to purify and strengthen each chakra in your journey towards enlightenment.
What Are Names Of The Chakras? Each of the seven main chakra relates to a specific quality or element and associated with organs and glands.
  1. The Root Chakra - at the base of your spine and anus, brings stability, grounding.
  2. The Sacral Chakra - located in your sacrum/lower abdomen, focuses on creativity, self-expression, nurturing, sexuality.
