    • 1). Remove your current tailpiece, if present. Place a bucket underneath the curved p-trap at the bottom of the sink plumbing. Loosen the couplings on either side of the p-trap and pull them out of the plumbing. Empty the trap into the bucket. Unscrew the retaining nut underneath the sink basket. Press up on the sink basket and tailpiece assembly until the basket pops out of the sink above.

    • 2). Roll out a strip of plumber's putty about 1/8 of an inch wide. Press this into place on the underside of the sink flange.

    • 3). Insert the sink flange into the bottom of the sink. Turn the flange back and forth slightly to help seal the putty.

    • 4). Slip the gaskets over the sink basket poking out from underneath the sink. Hold these in place with one hand.

    • 5). Secure the flange from underneath the sink with the retaining nut using your other hand. Tighten further with a pair of pliers or a plumber's wrench.

    • 6). Insert the tailpiece into the opening at the bottom of the sink basket. Slide the coupling on the tailpiece until it meets the threads on the basket. Tighten the coupling by hand if it is made of PVC or with a wrench if it is made of metal.

    • 7). Trim the end of the dishwasher drain hose to the appropriate size for your sink tailpiece with a utility knife. Most drain hoses will have markers on the end of the hose to help you determine where to cut.

    • 8). Slip the dishwasher hose over the inlet on the tailpiece. Secure with a pipe clamp.

    • 9). Insert the p-trap between the bottom of the tailpiece and the sewer inlet pipe. Secure with the couplings by tightening them clockwise.
