    Carbohydrates

    • Carbohydrates are converted into sugar during the digestive process and used to provide energy for your activities. There are two types of carbohydrates, and the category they fall into depends on how quickly they are digested and converted into glucose, which is used by your cells for energy. Simple carbohydrates, such as table sugar or refined white bread, are converted into glucose quickly, which causes your blood sugar to rise quickly. Whole grain breads, and other complex carbohydrates, are a better choice for preventing high blood sugar, since they take longer to be converted into glucose.

    Combining Foods

    • Eating other foods with carbohydrates helps to slow the process of converting carbs into glucose. In particular, foods containing protein and fat slow the digestion of carbohydrates and result in a slower rise in blood sugar levels. If you combine a handful of nuts, which contain both protein and fat, with a higher carb food such as fruit, you will experience a more gradual increase in your blood sugar.

    Exercise

    • Consistent and moderate exercise benefits anyone with high blood sugar by resulting in some degree of weight loss, which helps your body regulate all body processes more efficiently. In addition, exercise helps individuals who have high blood sugar as a result of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a condition in which the cells of your body don't respond correctly to insulin and need more insulin than normal in order to allow glucose into the cell. Exercise increases insulin sensitivity, allowing your body to use the sugar in your blood more efficiently.
