One of the great ways of entertaining family and friends is hanging around a fire pit on a nice cool evening enjoying your beautiful backyard.
Just kicking back around the fire pit or getting ready to grill some great food is always fun.
As with any fire, you must always use safety precautions.
Never take safety for granted.
First and foremost is keeping the children and pets safe.
Make sure you have a working water hose or fire extinguisher nearby and always make sure that children and pets are not in close range of the fire.
Secondly, it's very important to make sure you have a good location.
Fire pits are to be used outdoors.
Although is may seem like a good idea, do not light the pit inside your tent or in a closed area.
These fires give off fumes that can be dangerous.
Ventilation is very important.
Put some time into where you're going to use your outdoor pit.
Are there any trees or shrubbery hanging close by? Are the sparks going to create a hazard for low tree branches, dry brush or grass? Is your pit on a patio or wood deck? It's not a good idea to have your pit on a wood deck, but you can try a fire pit pad, bricks or a stone slab to protect your deck.
Make sure the ground is level, so the pit doesn't tip over and be aware of any cables hanging down close by.
Before you start a fire, check the fire regulations in your area.
Many public places don't allow a pit without it being covered by a smoke screen.
Never throw garbage in the pit, of any kind, as they release harmful fumes and chemicals that can be hazardous to your health and to the environment.
Make sure you're not close to any type of fuel.
The fumes from kerosene filled lanterns, portable camp stoves, etc.
, can cause sparks and are enough to start a possible fire.
When close to your pit make sure not to spray any type of bug spray or any type of aerosols, because these are very flammable and dangerous.
Never throw any type of chemical into your pit.
Never leave your fire unattended, while it's lit or even when it's cooling down.
As your fire may be cooling down, it's easy to assume just because they're no open flames or sparks, that's it's cooled down.
This is not the case.
Remember to take care when handling the ashes and insure they're cooled down completely.
And dispose of properly.
So relax and enjoy your friends and family gatherings around your fire pit in your backyard, and always play it safe!
