    • 1). Apply with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for a federal firearms license. This is optional for a gunsmith, but if you are buying and selling firearms for business purposes it is mandatory.

    • 2). Log onto the Indiana Secretary of State Web site and apply for a business license. Supply information concerning the business entity type, the business name, the address of the principal office, the address of the registered agent and the names and addresses of the principals.

    • 3). Apply with the state for a license to sell firearms if this will be a part of your business. Submit the application to the sheriff of the county in which the business is located.

    • 4). Register and obtain a business license with the local municipality if this is required.
