They didn't hurt they were just making me aggravated because I was trying to sleep. He was shocked to see that they were 3 - 4 minutes apart and lasting 45 - 60 seconds and I was just waking him. We timed the contractions for a little while and called the midwife at around 4:45. She told us to come on in around 6:00. We called my mom and told her to meet us up there. We got there and Jean (the midwife) was there to greet us with a smile.

Jean checked me and said that I was looking good but not completely ready. She told me to lots of walking around the park next door and to do some squatting. I did just what she told me. That helped bring on the contractions even more and I dilated more too. I don't know when everyone got there, I was walking around talking to my parents, my sister, my mother- in - law, and my aunt and not thinking twice about having a contraction in mid - sentence. Things started getting closer and stronger so I went in the birthing room and closed the door. The only people that were in the room were Charles, Jean, Myra(the doula), and Sarah (my sister). The only person I remember being in the room is Charles. I remember Myra being there when we first got to the birthing center. I only remember her because I didn't want to be touched by anyone but Charles. I had to convince myself that it was okay for her to touch me because she was there to help us have this baby. She turned out to be the most wonderful helper!

Once I was fully dilated Jean told me I could start pushing if I need to. She told me that I need to try to do a lot of squatting during my contractions because the baby was not moving down very fast. She said to me that it was not anything to worry about because sometimes babies wait until the very end to come down. However, she told everyone in the other room that she was giving me 2 more hours then she wanted to admit me to the hospital because it was taking the baby to long to drop and she was afraid he would be in distress. Jean knew that I was determined! I did a lot of laboring on the toilet (that was by far the most comfortable position!) and did some on all fours. And I was getting very weak and decided it was time to be in the bed. Wouldn't you know that felt better between contractions! I remember(sorta) during one contraction I stopped in mid stride to adjust the mirror Charles was holding to I could see my baby's head. I don't remember looking I just remember adjusting. Shortly after that everyone was getting very excited because it was time. Jean got his head and shoulders out and let Charles do the rest. Charles cut the cord and we laid in the bed with our new born son. Meanwhile Jean was giving me a painful shot of novocaine to numb my "area" so she could sew up a little tear I had/an internal ruptured varicose vein. I don't remember the contractions hurting but that dang shot sure did! We tried to get him to nurse for a little while and then we let my family come in.
Charles got to give Tyler his first bath while I got to lay there in the bed. It was kinda funny, everyone followed Charles to the bathroom and left me there all by myself. That was okay with me though, I need the alone time - REST! We had some lunch and got everything together and went home at about 4:30 that afternoon. That was so nice to not have to stay somewhere other than in my own bed and my own surroundings.

To this day, one year later, I can call the birthing center and just say, hey Laura, this is Dee and she knows who it is. I could never do that with my ob/gyn. Our birthing experience was so wonderful and so special. I am thankful that we have such wonderful people to help us bring our children into this world. We will hopefully be making a return trip through the birthing center within the next several months!
